Techipedia Redesign is Finally Live

April 2, 2008

After months (and I mean months) of planning, the blog redesign for techipedia is finally live.

This wouldn’t have been possible if not for a few people, so I’d like to thank them for their awesome work.

First, thanks to designer Patrick Winfield of 10e20 for the excellent graphic design work. Pat was very patient, and as you can tell, he did an excellent job. Also, thanks to Chris Winfield for giving me a hand on this project.

Second, the backend coding, for the most part, was handled by web developer Cesar Serna, who also did a fantastic job.

Thank you so much for your hard work!

I know there will still be some tweaks that will be made in the upcoming days, but I’d love your feedback on the new design.

Why Do I Blog? Let Me Count the Ways

April 6, 2007

Another meme has come to town, and this time I’m answering this one here (my last meme was posted over at 10e20.com — 5 things you don’t know about me). Nathan Weinberg (still no relation) tagged me and Barry, among a few others, and while I’m totally under the weather with an awful cold, I decided that I have to oblige right away because I’m going to be inundated with family and conferences over the next week.

So, why do I blog? Upon giving it more thought, here are my reasons:

  • I love to write. On my About page, I write about how I wanted to be an author. That never quite materialized (attempting to realize your parents’ dreams at a very impressionable young age almost always does that to you). With my blog, I can freely express what I want and can finally see myself as a writer.
  • I love to learn. My blogs (well, there are actually six of them) have enabled me to open doors and learn new things.
    • 10e20 gave me the opportunity to explore the blogging arena in the area of SEO and social media, using strategies learned at an older job.

And a New Era is About to Begin

March 15, 2007

I’m sure a few people have been watching me blog (with extreme gusto lately) and have wondered where the old me has gone. In case you’re not reading the other blogs, I’m moving on from a place that has been very close to my heart, and I’ll soon be doing some serious sidekicking. As I’m transitioning into a new role, from that of a systems administrator to that of a blogger (and then some), I’ve seen the need to be a little more open, and I’m having a lot more fun with this blog. It is a little more diverse than I initially intended it to be, which I’m actually really excited about.

Did You Really Have to Make a Video for That?

March 13, 2007

No PhotographyI saw a very strange thing today. In response to Chris’s post about MySpace’s Digg clone, SearchAnyway replied using video. But if you listen to the whole one minute and forty seconds of the video, there’s nothing in it except for a guy talking, trying to explain to News Corp that removing the “Digg” button would be a bad move and would ostracize a user community.

After watching the video in its entirety, I couldn’t help but wonder if video was necessary for the points that the other Chris wanted to get across. It would make for a great written blog, but video? After all, it was just a monologue of a guy making an argument, which would have done much better in the written word with the necessary emphasis.

While online video is a “technological breakthrough,” I don’t think there’s much effectiveness when video is being used this way to tell a story without any engaging aspects. As I wrote in December, we are already heavily overloaded with multimedia, and not everybody is ready to embrace it. Further, it’s hard for individuals to take the time out of the day to immerse themselves in content that is not easily multitaskable (my new word for the day; I told you I could have used Quizlet). Blog video defies the nature of blogging (and RSS). Once I start watching this speech, I have to watch it in its entirety. Some folks might be inclined to go so far as to say “I want that 1 minute 40 seconds of my life back.”

My Company Blog Has Been Launched

November 8, 2006

It’s been a busy day and night, and stuff is still being developed and made better, because status quo just doesn’t do it anymore (nor did it ever). With that said, I bring to you my company’s blog, which I have already begun contributing to heavily. Our audience is primarily the consumer with no formal background in web design and search engine optimization, so we’ll be building this from ground up. Since techipedia.com is a more advanced blog (for the most part, albeit since my father said that he doesn’t understand anything I’ve written here, I probably should write for a wider audience), most of what is on the beginner level is there.

I have already begun preparing a 4-part series on how to blog for businesses, since we have recently taken a turn offering this option to our clients.

It’s definitely been a fun ride so far, and I’m excited to watch this blog grow.
