Viral Marketing: Weezer Gets it Right

May 28, 2008

In one of the most brilliant marketing moves of all time from a social media perspective, alternative rock band Weezer created an awesome video for their new single, “Pork and Beans,” using internet superstars from a handful of successful YouTube videos. Here’s a look at their amazing creation:

These are all the original YouTube stars. All Weezer did was bring them together to create a revolutionary video that should change the way you think about your marketing approach. Included in this video is Tay Zonday of Chocolate Rain fame, the Blendtec’s famous “Will it Blend” blender (can you spot it?), Miss Teen South Carolina, the kid behind the famous Romanian Numa Numa video, All Your Base are Belong to Us, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, the “stupid” ninja guy, and a guy who made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for wearing the most t-shirts at any time, among many other internet celebrities. (If you didn’t know about any of these memes, you need to venture out farther and scope out your territory.)

With 4 Days Before Blogger Social, I Bring You the 4×4 Meme

March 31, 2008

As I was traveling on my last of three conferences, Chris Kieff tagged me on the 4×4 meme that’s going around. The idea of this meme is somewhat like previous memes, but it’s four times full of fun. You’re given four questions and you need to provide four answers. Then, you need to top it off by tagging four people. Here goes…

4 Things I Have Done in the Past 4 Years

Clearly, the past four years have been the most enjoyable years of my life. Here’s why:

  1. Just over three years ago, I got married to a wonderful guy named Brian.
  2. I’ve traveled more than ever before. Brian and I celebrated our honeymoon in London. I went to the West Coast for the first time to attend search engine conferences, with trips to Seattle, San Jose (twice!), and Las Vegas.
  3. I started writing for some of my favorite blogs in the industries and topics I’m most passionate about.
  4. I started a blog about my schwag addiction (okay, this was just a fun tidbit I couldn’t pass up!)

8 Random Things You Never Really Knew About Me

August 27, 2007

David Dalka from Chicago tagged me in a relatively recent meme, and although I’ve already answered this question once before, I decided that I’d do David a favor and oblige. ;)

It took me a good deal of time to find eight things that people don’t really know about me, but I think I have it…

  1. When I was young, my mother always said I was going to be a lawyer. I guess I always had a disposition for playing devil’s advocate (or fighting for something I firmly believed in). I still do try to make strong arguments, but I’m not an attorney. The closest thing to that was being a private investigator post-college.
  2. I used to read books. A lot. Then, at age 12, I got my own computer. Reading was put on the back burner for about 14 years. I only started picking up books again recently after a close friend suggested that I read some good books.

Outstanding Meme Obligations

May 25, 2007

Ah, right. Despite my little blurb on Search Engine Roundtable about the overrated nature of memes, I still got tagged. That leaves three memes that I haven’t answered, and I feel that I have to do my duty. Don’t get upset if these answers don’t impress you; I don’t think they’re that insightful. :)

I’m going to go in chronological order, from the first meme that I got tagged in and didn’t answer.

What magazines do I read offline?

Barry tagged me in the over-a-monthlong-old meme asking me what magazines I read offline. I somewhat answered that one on Twitter, but it’s fairly obvious from recent blog posts that I read PEOPLE magazine on a weekly basis. Given that I still have a ton of book-reading to catch up on (yes, still), I don’t read much else on a regular basis, but depending on where you find me, I might be reading Popular Photography, Newsweek, Time, Money, or any other magazine I have in my magazine stand from several months or years ago. I really have lost track of my to-do reading pile, but there’s a lot I have to catch up on. Without even volunteering names of my magazines, earlier, I was ready to give Vanessa’s answer, where she so eloquently said what I wanted to say:
